Buena Vista

Foaled on 14 March 2006, Buena Vista was bred by Northern Farm. She was by Special Week out of Biwa Heidi, a daughter of Caerleon, and belonged to a productive immediate family that also included Admire Aura, Tosen Reve and Admire Japan.

She raced for Sunday Racing Co. Ltd. after being syndicated in 40 shares, each offered at ¥1 million. Hiroyoshi Matsuda trained her from his Ritto base. Those connections placed Buena Vista within the prominent Northern Farm–Sunday Racing structure, but her longevity at the highest level made her an especially notable representative of it.

Although many of her most important performances came over middle distances, Buena Vista demonstrated a broad range. She won Group 1 races from 1,600 to 2,400 metres and remained competitive over 2,500 metres, with her results spanning Tokyo, Hanshin, Kyoto and Nakayama as well as an international appearance in Dubai.

Buena Vista began her three-year-old campaign in the Tulip Sho at Hanshin on 7 March 2009. She won the 1,600-metre Group 3 from Sakura Mimosa, providing a successful preparation for the Oka Sho over the same course and distance.

The Oka Sho, Japan’s 1,000 Guineas, brought Buena Vista together with Red Desire, who became one of the central rivals of her Classic season. Buena Vista won the 18-runner Group 1 on 12 April, with Red Desire second, adding a Classic to her juvenile championship success.

The rivalry resumed at Tokyo in the Yushun Himba, or Japanese Oaks, on 24 May. The race required Buena Vista to extend from 1,600 metres to 2,400 metres, but the longer distance did not prevent the same one-two result: Buena Vista won, again defeating Red Desire. Her victories in both the Oka Sho and Yushun Himba demonstrated that she could carry her elite form from a mile to a mile and a half.

Her unbeaten run that season ended in the Sapporo Kinen on 23 August, when she finished second to Yamanin Kingly over 2,000 metres. In the Shuka Sho at Kyoto, Red Desire reversed their earlier Classic results, winning while Buena Vista finished third. Buena Vista was third again in the 2,200-metre Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup, behind Queen Spumante.

She closed the year by taking on a broader field in the Arima Kinen at Nakayama. With Norihiro Yokoyama riding, she finished second to Dream Journey over 2,500 metres. Although the latter part of the season brought several defeats, that Arima Kinen placing showed that her competitiveness extended beyond the three-year-old filly division.

Buena Vista opened 2010 with victory in the Kyoto Kinen, defeating Jaguar Mail over 2,200 metres. She then travelled to Dubai for the 2,410-metre Dubai Sheema Classic, where Olivier Peslier rode her to second place behind Dar Re Mi in a field of 16.

Back in Japan, she shortened considerably in distance for the Victoria Mile at Tokyo. Despite returning to 1,600 metres after races over 2,200 and 2,410 metres, she defeated Hikaru Amaranthus to secure another Group 1 victory. The result offered a clear measure of her versatility: she could succeed at the top level over a mile while also remaining effective over substantially longer distances.

Buena Vista finished second to Nakayama Festa in the Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin before returning in the autumn for the 2,000-metre Tenno Sho at Tokyo. Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, she defeated Pelusa in the 18-runner Group 1, adding one of Japan’s principal all-aged races to her record.

Her season ended with two more major runner-up finishes. She was second to Rose Kingdom in the Japan Cup over 2,400 metres and then second to Victoire Pisa in the 2,500-metre Arima Kinen. Across 2010 she had won Group 1 races at 1,600 and 2,000 metres, placed in major events at 2,200, 2,400, 2,410 and 2,500 metres, and competed successfully both at home and abroad. She was recognised as JRA Best Older Filly or Mare and also received JRA Horse of the Year honours.

Retired after a career that ran across four seasons, Buena Vista left a record distinguished by both range and persistence. She advanced from maiden company to a juvenile Group 1 in the space of three starts, became a dual Classic winner, and then remained among Japan’s leading older horses through the end of 2011.

Her ¥1,386.43 million in JRA earnings reflects the sustained quality of that career, while her honours give it formal historical weight. Consecutive titles as JRA Best Older Filly or Mare in 2010 and 2011 show that her excellence was not confined to her Classic season, and the Horse of the Year award marked the wider significance of her achievements.

Buena Vista’s legacy rests on that complete progression: a top juvenile, a Classic-winning three-year-old, a champion older mare and, finally, a Japan Cup winner. Bred by Northern Farm, raced by Sunday Racing and carrying the blood of Special Week and Biwa Heidi, she became one of the defining Japanese mares of the late 2000s and early 2010s.
