Tamamo Cross was one of the standout Japanese racehorses of the late 1980s, a gray stallion foaled on 23 May 1984 and bred by Nishikino Bokujo. He raced in the colors of Tamamo Co. Ltd. and was trained at Ritto by Isami Obara.

On pedigree he was by C.B. Cross, a son of Fortino, out of Green Chateau, by Chateaugay. His family was productive as well, with siblings including Miyama Poppy, Chateau Dancer, and Tamamo Green.
His racing career was comparatively compact but highly effective. From 18 starts he won 9 races, with 3 seconds and 2 thirds, and earned just under ¥490 million. After taking the Naruo Kinen in 1987, he rose to the very top level in 1988, a season that defined his reputation. That year he won the Tenno Sho (Spring), Hanshin Daishoten, Takarazuka Kinen, and Tenno Sho (Autumn), a sequence that established him as one of the leading older horses in Japan.
Those performances brought him the highest honors of his era. Tamamo Cross was named the 1988 Japanese Horse of the Year and also received the JRA Award for Best Older Male Horse. For a horse whose top career lasted only a short span, the impact was enormous: he became one of the emblematic names of Japan’s 1980s racing scene, remembered especially for his gray coat and his sweep through the country’s major races.
After retiring from racing, Tamamo Cross went on to a substantial stud career. He sired 808 progeny credited with 507 JRA wins, and his offspring included 18 JRA group stakes winners, giving him a meaningful legacy even without a JRA G1 winner among them. That breadth of production helped carry his influence forward beyond his own race record.
Tamamo Cross died on 10 April 2003. His place in Japanese racing history rests on a brilliant championship season, major victories in both spring and autumn, and a stud record that ensured his name remained familiar long after his days on the track were over.
