Chrono Genesis

Origins and pedigree
Foaled on 6 March 2016, Chrono Genesis was bred by Northern Farm. She was by Bago, the French-bred son of Nashwan, and out of the gray mare Chronologist, whose sire was Kurofune. Her pedigree carries a 4 × 4 duplication of Mr. Prospector.
Chronologist established a notably successful branch of a modern Japanese female family. In addition to Chrono Genesis, she produced Normcore, winner of the 2019 Victoria Mile at G1 level. The family also included the winners Happiness Dancer and Chronostasis, giving Chrono Genesis a strong foundation before her own racecourse achievements elevated the line further.
She raced for Sunday Racing Co. Ltd., having been offered through the club as a 40-share syndicate horse at ¥350,000 per share. Takashi Saito trained her at Ritto, and Yoshihiro Kitamura—also rendered as Yuichi Kitamura in English-language records—rode her through most of her career. Christophe Lemaire took over for two of her major late-season appearances in 2021.

Racing career
Early promise at two
Chrono Genesis began racing in September 2018, winning an 1,800-metre maiden on turf at Kokura. She followed that debut with another victory in the Ivy Stakes at Tokyo, again over 1,800 metres. Those two wins earned her a place in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, where she faced G1 company for the first time.
At Hanshin in December, she finished second to Danon Fantasy over 1,600 metres. Although narrowly denied an unbeaten two-year-old season, she had progressed directly from maiden and open-class victories to a placing at the highest level.
A classic campaign in 2019
Chrono Genesis opened her three-year-old campaign by winning the G3 Queen Cup at Tokyo in February 2019. She defeated Beach Samba over 1,600 metres, confirming that her juvenile form had carried into the new season.
She then contested the first two legs of Japan’s fillies’ Triple Crown. In the Oka Sho, the Japanese 1000 Guineas, she finished third behind Gran Alegria over 1,600 metres at Hanshin. Stepping up to 2,400 metres for the Yushun Himba, or Japanese Oaks, she again finished third, this time in a race won by Loves Only You.
Those placings kept her among the leading fillies of the crop without yet delivering a classic victory. That changed in October at Kyoto. Racing over 2,000 metres in the Shuka Sho, she defeated Curren Bouquetd’Or to secure her first G1 win. The result converted a season of consistent classic-level form into a major championship success.
Her final start of the year came in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2,200 metres at Kyoto. She finished fifth behind Lucky Lilac, with Loves Only You also among the notable runners.
Defining races
Shuka Sho: the breakthrough
The 2019 Shuka Sho was the key turning point in Chrono Genesis’s career. Before it, she had already won at open and graded level and had placed in three G1 races, but the 2,000-metre contest at Kyoto supplied the first top-level victory.
Her defeat of Curren Bouquetd’Or was also significant within the context of a deep generation. During that season Chrono Genesis had competed against Gran Alegria, Loves Only You and Curren Bouquetd’Or, and her Shuka Sho success established her as a classic winner in her own right.
Takarazuka Kinen: ascent to open-age prominence
Chrono Genesis returned at four by winning the 2020 Kyoto Kinen over 2,200 metres on soft turf, once again defeating Curren Bouquetd’Or. She then finished second to Lucky Lilac in the Osaka Hai at Hanshin, demonstrating that she could carry her form from the fillies’ classics into elite open-age competition.
Her next appearance, the Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin in June, produced the first half of her remarkable 2020 double. Drawn 16 in a field of 18, she won the 2,200-metre G1 on good-to-soft turf, with Kiseki finishing second. Lucky Lilac and Blast Onepiece were also among the runners.
The victory mattered not only as her second G1 but as confirmation that the previous year’s Shuka Sho had been the beginning rather than the summit of her career. She was now a leading older horse capable of defeating established male and female opposition in one of Japan’s principal all-aged contests.
Arima Kinen: the signature victory
After finishing third behind Almond Eye in the autumn Tenno Sho at Tokyo, Chrono Genesis went to Nakayama for the 2020 Arima Kinen. The 2,500-metre Grand Prix brought together a field that included Salacia, Lucky Lilac, Curren Bouquetd’Or, Loves Only You, Kiseki and Blast Onepiece.
Chrono Genesis defeated Salacia to complete a Takarazuka Kinen–Arima Kinen double in the same season. Netkeiba identifies the Arima Kinen as her major win, and it became the defining result of a campaign that established her among the central figures of Japanese racing in 2020.
Her performances that year—victory in the Kyoto Kinen, second in the Osaka Hai, wins in both Grand Prix races and third in the Tenno Sho—earned her the JRA Special Award for 2020.
International challenge and a second Takarazuka Kinen
Chrono Genesis began 2021 with an overseas campaign in the Dubai Sheema Classic. Over 2,410 metres, she finished second to Mishriff in a nine-runner field. Loves Only You was also among the competitors.
Back in Japan, she attempted to retain the Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin. With Christophe Lemaire riding, she defeated Unicorn Lion over 2,200 metres, becoming a consecutive winner of the race. The success was her fourth G1 victory and reinforced the Takarazuka Kinen as a defining element of her record.
She subsequently travelled to France for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, where Oisin Murphy rode her over 2,400 metres on soft turf. She finished seventh in the 14-runner race won by Torquator Tasso.
Chrono Genesis made her final start in the 2021 Arima Kinen. Attempting to defend her title, she finished third behind Efforia at Nakayama, bringing her career to a close with another placing at the highest level.
Consistency, range and leading rivals
Chrono Genesis’s record—eight wins, three seconds and four thirds from 17 starts—meant that she finished in the first three on 15 occasions. Her major results extended from 1,600 metres, where she won the Queen Cup and placed in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and Oka Sho, through to 2,500 metres in the Arima Kinen.
Her career repeatedly intersected with an exceptional group of Japanese horses. She finished behind Gran Alegria in the Oka Sho, Loves Only You in the Japanese Oaks, Lucky Lilac in both the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and Osaka Hai, and Almond Eye in the autumn Tenno Sho. Curren Bouquetd’Or was a recurring opponent whom Chrono Genesis defeated in both the Shuka Sho and Kyoto Kinen, while Kiseki finished behind her in the first of her two Takarazuka Kinen victories.
That breadth of competition gave her record depth beyond the headline wins. She succeeded in a classic restricted to three-year-old fillies, twice won an all-aged Grand Prix event at Hanshin, captured the Arima Kinen over Nakayama’s 2,500 metres and finished second in Dubai.
Retirement and legacy
Chrono Genesis retired after the 2021 Arima Kinen and entered broodmare duty. Her first recorded foal was Bereshit, a dark bay colt by Epiphaneia born in 2023. Like his dam, he was owned by Sunday Racing and trained by Takashi Saito; he won on debut in a maiden race at Kokura in July 2025.
She subsequently produced a gray filly by Saturnalia in 2024 and a dark bay filly by Equinox in 2025. These matings extended the breeding career of a mare whose value rests on both her own record and the demonstrated strength of Chronologist’s family.
Chrono Genesis’s racecourse legacy is anchored by four G1 victories with distinct significance: the Shuka Sho established her as a classic winner, the two Takarazuka Kinen triumphs showed her sustained open-age quality, and the Arima Kinen gave her a signature Grand Prix success. Her 2020 season remains the center of that legacy—a campaign in which she won Japan’s two major fan-selected Grand Prix races and received special recognition from the JRA.
