Haru Urara
Haru Urara (ハルウララ), affectionately called Urara, is Tracen Academy’s irrepressible ray of sunshine: a lovable mood-maker who refuses to let a losing streak dim her smile. She may not be a natural prodigy, but her cheerful determination makes her unforgettable—“Even if I keep losing, I won’t let it get me down!”
Before joining Tracen’s Junior Division, Urara raced in Kochi and dreamed of finding something more exciting. Her entrance exam did not go well, yet the interview revealed the quality no score could measure: a personality so bright and sincere that the academy accepted her anyway. It is the perfect foundation for her character. Urara’s great talent is not effortless victory, but the ability to meet disappointment without surrendering her enthusiasm.
At 140 cm tall, she is a small but vivid presence, wrapped in an image palette of lively pink and yellow. She refers to herself as Watashi or simply Urara, and addresses her trainer with the equally straightforward “Trainer.” Even her official weight note—“slight increase (but not a big concern)”—carries the same breezy lack of alarm that defines her outlook. Yukina Shuto voices her, lending energy to that buoyant, earnest charm.
Urara lives in Ritto Dorm with King Halo. Her wider circle includes Rice Shower, Narita Top Road, Agnes Digital, and Yukino Bijin, with Yukino also identified as a rival. Yet competition never eclipses Urara’s central appeal: she is an underdog without bitterness, someone whose struggles sharpen her optimism rather than crushing it. Even her solo song title, Kyou mo Urara ka Que Sera, Sera!, suits that unmistakable “whatever comes, keep going” spirit.

Origins and pedigree
Foaled on 27 February 1996, Haru Urara was bred by Nobuta Bokujo at Utafue in Mitsuishi, Hokkaido. She was by the bay stallion Nippo Teio, a son of Lypheor and Chiyoda Masako. Her dam, Heroine, was a bay daughter of the American-bred Lucky Sovereign and Peerless Lady.
That pedigree placed Haru Urara within established Thoroughbred bloodlines, but her eventual reputation had little to do with breeding prestige or conventional racing achievement. Her fame arose from an unusually long, winless career on Japan’s regional circuit.
Ownership changed during her life. Her listed owners included Nobuta Bokujo, Takao Yokoyama, M A Office and, eventually, Haru Urara no Kai. Dai Muneishi remained her trainer throughout her racing career and became the central training connection in a story built over many seasons at Kochi Racecourse.

Racing career
Early appearances at Kochi
Haru Urara began racing at Kochi in late 1998. Her recorded debut came in a Three-Year-Olds 3 race over 1,000 metres on dirt on 17 November. Ridden by F. Furukawa from draw three, she finished fifth behind Gallopski.
Her next two starts followed the same short-course pattern. On 13 December she again finished fifth over 1,000 metres, this time behind Easy Queen. In a Three-Year-Olds 4 event on 31 December, with S. Tokudome riding, she came home sixth behind Easy King.
Those first races established the conditions that would define much of her working life: ordinary regional competition on dirt, frequent appearances and short distances. There was no breakthrough victory, but she continued into 1999 and soon moved primarily to 1,300-metre races.
On 10 January 1999, Haru Urara finished fifth behind Sweet King in a Four-Year-Olds 4 contest over 1,300 metres. She was sixth behind Harima Ichimonji later that month, then improved to fourth behind Multi Iruseta on 13 February.
First placings and a near miss
Her first recorded top-three finish came on 27 February 1999, her third birthday. Ridden by Y. Tokudome in another 1,300-metre Four-Year-Olds 4 race at Kochi, she finished third behind Tomino Chanel.
The result did not lead immediately to greater consistency. Haru Urara finished tenth behind Evlos Fit in March, followed by two fourth-place finishes in April. On 4 May she reached the frame again, taking third behind Odaken Harmony from draw ten. Through the summer, however, her results ranged from fifth to eighth as she continued to meet a changing succession of regional rivals.
A more significant result arrived on 4 October 1999. Competing in a C68 race over 1,300 metres, Haru Urara was ridden by K. Imamura from draw six and finished second to Pot Man Dyna. It was not a win, but it became one of five runner-up finishes in her career and illustrated that her 113 defeats were not all distant or anonymous: she sometimes approached the result that ultimately remained beyond her.
The season continued through November and December, with Haru Urara finishing sixth, seventh, fifth and fourth in four further Kochi starts. The volume and regularity of these appearances were increasingly characteristic of her campaign.
The long regional campaign
During 2000, Haru Urara remained active in Kochi’s lower-level C-class races, almost always over 1,300 metres on dirt. H. Miyagawa and K. Imamura were among her regular riders, while Y. Ogata, S. Myojin and F. Furukawa also partnered her.
The results fluctuated without producing a victory. She finished fourth behind Safety Arrow on 18 March, then recorded finishes of fifth, eighth, seventh, seventh, sixth and fifth from April through July. In August she twice finished fourth, first behind Golden Tolomeo and then behind One For All.
Those fourth-place results were followed by another sequence of defeats through the end of the year. Strong Max beat her in consecutive September races, while Taiki Liberty did the same in October and November. Inter Shark won two races in which Haru Urara finished fifth and eighth, and Golden Shake defeated her in her final recorded start of 2000.
Her campaign continued in 2001. She finished tenth behind Kona Sunset on 22 January, sixth behind Hama Okan in February and fifth behind Eishin Caerleon later that month. After an eighth-place finish in March, she moved into E-class races, where she finished ninth behind Tosano Big, eighth behind Tribune and ninth behind Asakusa Tablet.
This repetitive program was the foundation of her eventual public identity. Haru Urara was not a stakes horse descending through the grades after earlier success; she was a regional dirt sprinter whose career unfolded through everyday races. Start after start accumulated until the absence of a victory ceased to be merely a line in the formbook and became the defining fact of her public story.
Defining races and milestones
The debut at Kochi
The 1,000-metre race on 17 November 1998 began a career that would ultimately stretch to 113 starts. Haru Urara’s fifth-place finish behind Gallopski offered no suggestion of conventional distinction, yet it marked the beginning of one of Japanese racing’s most unusual records.
Third on her birthday
Her third-place finish behind Tomino Chanel on 27 February 1999 was an early indication that she could reach the placings even if victory proved elusive. It was also the first of seven thirds in her final record.
Runner-up to Pot Man Dyna
The C68 contest on 4 October 1999 stands out among her documented early races. Haru Urara finished second, one of only five such results in her career. In the context of a winless record, each near miss mattered: it showed how close she could come while preserving the streak that would eventually make her famous.
Completing 113 starts without a win
No single victory defined the end of Haru Urara’s campaign. Instead, the cumulative milestone became the achievement for which she was remembered: 113 starts, 113 defeats. Along the way she earned five second-place finishes, seven thirds and ¥1.129 million on the NAR circuit. She recorded no JRA earnings and no major-race success.
Her statistics were stark, but they also explain the unusual gap between her sporting record and her reputation. Horses with modest records are ordinarily forgotten; Haru Urara’s record was so persistent and distinctive that it produced the opposite result.
Connections and racing profile
Haru Urara was trained by Dai Muneishi throughout her career. The continuity of that association accompanied a much broader turnover among her riders, including F. Furukawa, S. Tokudome, Y. Tokudome, T. Yamakita, K. Imamura, H. Miyagawa, Y. Ogata and S. Myojin.
Her race record identifies her principally as a dirt sprinter. She began over 1,000 metres and was subsequently campaigned extensively over 1,300 metres. Rather than being built around major meetings or championship targets, her schedule consisted of regular NAR competition at Kochi. Her reputation consequently developed race by race, through repeated participation rather than one defining performance at an elite level.
The horse’s ownership also changed over time. Nobuta Bokujo, Takao Yokoyama and M A Office were among her listed owners before Haru Urara no Kai became her final prominent ownership connection. These changes did not alter the central paradox of her career: the longer she went without winning, the more recognizable she became.
Retirement and legacy
Plans were made to breed Haru Urara to the prominent stallions Deep Impact and Stay Gold, but neither mating took place. In 2013 she was transported by her owner at the time to Matha Farm in Onjuku, Chiba, where she spent the remainder of her life.
Haru Urara died at Matha Farm on 9 September 2025 of colic, aged 29. By then, her place in Japanese popular memory had long been secured.
Her legacy rests on an inversion of racing’s usual values. She won no races and held no major title, yet became one of Japan’s most famous losing horses and a widely recognized cultural phenomenon. The public meaning attached to her career emphasized effort, resilience and the refusal to stop trying, qualities made visible by the sheer length of her campaign.
That interpretation did not erase the formbook. Rather, it depended upon it: 113 starts, no wins, five seconds and seven thirds. Haru Urara’s enduring significance lies in the distance between those modest statistics and the affection she inspired. In a sport organized around winners, a small bay mare from Hokkaido became memorable precisely because she kept returning without becoming one.

Editor’s Note
Haru Urara has literally outrun the UI. Her remarkably persistent attempts to win have exposed the limits of the race timeline, so it now needs rebuilding to properly accommodate her 113 starts, also she broke the race AI system that apparently can't work out Kochi’s local race class codes. Haru Urara’s record may say 0 wins, but today (26/7/26) she’s beaten the timeline component; the race-class parser and the AI’s confidence. 113 starts, 0 wins, 2 confirmed software casualties. 😂
