Aston Machan

Returning at three, Aston Machan won the Fillies’ Revue in 2007. It was her third major victory and extended her success across consecutive seasons.

The Fillies’ Revue also marked an important point in her progression. Her juvenile wins had established her among the leading young fillies, but this victory showed that she had retained her effectiveness as a three-year-old. It became the bridge between her successful two-year-old campaign and the open-age sprint challenge that followed.

Aston Machan competed during an era that included prominent contemporaries such as Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka. Her own strongest identity, however, was formed in sprint racing. Rather than being remembered primarily through the broader contests involving her generation, she secured her lasting place through a direct, front-running performance against older sprinters.

Aston Machan’s most important performance came in the 2007 Sprinters Stakes. Facing older opposition, she went to the lead and remained there from start to finish, winning the Grade 1 contest through an unbroken front-running effort.

The race elevated her career beyond multiple graded-stakes success. It was her only Grade 1 victory and demonstrated that her speed could prevail in open-age company, not merely against other juveniles or three-year-old fillies.

Her manner of victory is central to her racing identity. That combination of initiative, sustained speed and success against older horses made the race the clearest expression of her sprinting ability.

The victory also completed a progression across two seasons. Aston Machan advanced from a two-year-old winner of the Kokura Nisai Stakes and Fantasy Stakes, through the Fillies’ Revue at three, to the highest level in open sprint competition. For a mare whose career lasted only 11 starts, the sequence gave her record a distinct and coherent shape.

Aston Machan’s career was closely associated with owner Mayumi Tosa and trainer Sei Ishizaka. Prepared from Ishizaka’s Ritto base, she developed into a specialist whose principal achievements came in sprint racing.

Her 2007 Sprinters Stakes victory provides the strongest evidence of how effective she could be when using her speed assertively. Leading throughout a Grade 1 against older horses required her to sustain that speed under open-age pressure, and the result became both the high point of her career and its defining image.

She belongs to the notable Japanese racing generation that included Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka, but her legacy occupies a different part of the sport. Aston Machan is remembered above all as a sprinting filly who developed quickly, won major races at two and three, and defeated older horses at Grade 1 level.
