Gentildonna was one of the defining Japanese mares of the 2010s: a bay daughter of Deep Impact out of Donna Blini, by Bertolini, foaled on 20 February 2009. Bred by Northern Farm, raced in the colors of Sunday Racing Co. Ltd., and trained at Ritto by Sei Ishizaka, she combined elite pedigree with a career that more than fulfilled it. She was also a syndicate horse, offered in 40 shares, reflecting the high regard in which she was held from the start.
Her rise to prominence came at three, when she completed the Japanese Triple Tiara and became only the fourth filly in history to do so. That achievement carried extra historical weight because it came just two years after Apapane’s 2010 sweep, and because her sire Deep Impact had himself won the Japanese Triple Crown in 2005. Gentildonna thus created a notable parent-and-offspring milestone: the first time a Triple Crown-winning sire and a Triple Tiara-winning daughter had both achieved those respective classic sweeps.
Although she was a Classic heroine, Gentildonna’s reputation was not confined to her three-year-old season. She developed into a major middle-distance force and built a top-level record of 19 starts for 10 wins, 4 seconds, and 1 third. Her earnings reached over ¥1.7 billion, placing her among the most accomplished earners of her era. She was recognized with the JRA Award for Best Older Filly or Mare, underscoring how successfully she carried her brilliance beyond her Classic year.
The race most inseparable from her name is the 2012 Japan Cup. In a famous duel with Orfevre, Gentildonna prevailed after an extremely close finish and deliberation, being awarded victory by just seven centimeters. It was a dramatic, enduring moment in modern Japanese racing, and it announced her as more than a Classic winner: she could defeat the very best in one of the country’s most prestigious open-company contests.
She later deepened that legacy by becoming the first horse in history to win the Japan Cup twice, a landmark that was only later matched by Almond Eye. That feat, together with her Triple Tiara, makes her stand out as a mare who excelled both in the age-restricted Classics and at the highest weight-for-age level. Her family also remained notable, with siblings including Donau Blue, winner of the 2012 Sekiya Kinen, and Attraente, later a stakes-level performer in allowance company.
Retired from racing, Gentildonna is remembered as one of Japan’s standout mares of her generation: a Deep Impact progeny who united pedigree, classic success, sustained elite performance, and a signature Japan Cup legacy. The supplied editor record also notes her death on 25 November 2025.
