Michelle My Baby is the fictional counterpart of the American racehorse My Big Boy, a notably tall and powerful dark bay or brown gelding who competed from the 1980s into 1990. Foaled in Kentucky on May 6, 1983, he was bred by Lillian Bostwick Phipps and later raced for Heidi Doubleday under trainer Claude R. McGaughey III.
By Our Hero out of Pretty Special, My Big Boy carried the influence of noted damsire Riverman. His pedigree and imposing physique were matched by durability: over 50 starts, he recorded 10 wins, 12 seconds, and 10 thirds, earning $1,196,102. He proved especially effective as a middle-distance turf runner.
The high point of his American career came in the 1988 Bernard Baruch Handicap, where he secured a Grade 1 victory. Two years later he added the 1990 Pan American Handicap, a Grade 2 event, demonstrating that he remained a major-level competitor late in his racing career.
My Big Boy also represented the United States in the 1988 Japan Cup at Tokyo. Ridden by Randy Romero and carrying 57 kilograms over 2,400 metres on turf, he finished fourth against an international field. That performance made him a memorable Japan Cup rival and provided the historical connection behind his portrayal as Michelle My Baby in Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray.
Because he was a gelding, My Big Boy did not enter stud. Instead, he found a substantial second career away from the racetrack as an event horse and fox hunter. He lived to the age of 29, dying on July 30, 2012, at After Hours Farm in Marshall, Virginia. His legacy rests not only on his Grade 1 success and million-dollar earnings, but also on his longevity, versatility, and enduring association with one of international racing’s most prominent contests.
